Taco Bell PDF Print E-mail

Taco Bell may have a bad reputation, but this popular fast food destination is a blessing for Vegans in a hurry or in the mood for some guilty pleasures.  Taco Bell has several options that are not only Vegan, but some are--dare I say--low Calorie and nutritious.  Now, since Taco Bell's items are pretty just mix & match to make meals, I don't know if our traditional rating system is up to snuff, so here's just a simple list of items (with substitutions) that are tasty and Vegan.

  • Crunchy taco, substitute beans for meat, no cheese, no sour cream
  • Fresco bean burrito
  • Grilled stuffed burrito, no cheese, no sauce
  • 7-layer burrito, no cheese, no sour cream

Buffalo Wild Wings Loses Avocado PDF Print E-mail

Unfortunately, Buffalo Wild Wings has changed their menu, removing the vegan-friendly Boca burger, and adding a Gardenburger containing dairy.  As a result CIV has no choice but to remove the one-avocado award from Buffalo Wild Wings as this restaurant is no longer considered Vegan-friendly in any way.

Central Illinois Vegan is pleased to award The Bread Company at 706 S. Goodwin Ave in Urbana with four avocados.  With at least five distinct options including pastas, crostini (fine toast topped with veg and sauce), salads, pizza, and bruschetta.  Their executive chef knows his stuff, and knows how to take care of discerning vegan customers.

Restaurant Rating System PDF Print E-mail

Central Illinois Vegan uses an innovative rating system of one through four avocados depending on how easy it is to find tasty vegan-friendly meals. Central Illinois Vegan will not list any restaurant that fails to be awarded at least one avocado.

An "option" is defined as a menu item or set of menu items constituting a distinct meal.  A side salad, chips and salsa, and french fries would all be examples of items that, while tasty, are not considered an "option" because they alone are not a complete meal. An option must also be distinct from other options.  A cheeseless olive pizza and a cheeseless onion pizza are not separate items... it's just cheeseless pizza that is the option.

Meet the avocados:

  • Four avocados are awarded to restaurants with more than four distinct options with at most one minor substitution.
  • Three avocados are awarded to a restaurant where at least four distinct options are available with up to three non-standard menu substitutions.
  • Two avocados are awarded to restaurants with at least two distinct options with up to two minor substitutions.
  • One avocado is awarded to a restaurant with at least two distinct options with at most four substitutions.

This is, as everything else, subject to refining, but for now we hope that this will be an intuitive way for us to express how vegan-friendly a restaurant is.

JT Walkers PDF Print E-mail

JT Walkers serves omni American fare for the most part, but it really is easy to find options there.  As well as flexible management and an executive chef willing and more than able to accommodate vegans, there are excellent menu options that--with only minor substitution--could be in your belly:

  • The veggie sandwich!  JTW's has the best veggie sandwich I've ever had, you just have to remove the cheese sauce.  I like to add avocado.  It comes with shoestring or steak fries.
  • Cheeseless pizza is actually something I really enjoy.  I like mine smoothered in onion and tomato sauce.
