Support Local Agriculture with a CSA
It's March now, and spring is about ready to jump out from behind the couch shouting "surprise!" That means we've got a whole bunch of good eats coming up in the form of fresh vegetables, all the while supporting our local growers! Have you yet made arrangements for CSA? A CSA is a program where you support local farmers, and they give you a supply of vegetables during their season. CSAs usually run anywhere from 20-25 weeks starting in mid-May, and most I've heard of cost around $350-$400 for that whole season. It's a great way to get fresh produce from ethical growers, help your local economy, and support responsible farming that is not destructive to the environment.
Here are a couple of links that can get you started, including the farm I am planning to do my CSA with this year.

Also, don't forget about the farmers market this year, it starts this year on May 1st on the corner of Illinois and Vine street in Urbana, right outside the east-most exits of the Lincoln Square Mall. And while you're at the farmer's market, don't forget to join the Common Grounds Food Co-Op in Lincoln Square mall.

Holy Crap It's Chocolate Inspirations!
Naturally, I can't review a product without trying it, so we requested some samples, and they came in today. While my wife jokingly insists that she needs more samples to come to an accurate conclusion, I'm much more decided... this stuff is good... really good. Check out this tasty soup for nutritious winter noms. Last Updated (Saturday, 20 February 2010 07:55) |
Vegan Pea SoupNot everybody enjoys peas as much as I do. If you, too, enjoy peas, try this soup! You've got loads of peas, loads of vegetable broth, and an all-around fantastic soup. Their frequent specials, good specials... not just the crappy dollar menu stuff, their super-fresh ingredients, and their willingness to accommodate special orders of vegans and vegetarians, I don't think it gets better than that. The management is outstanding, it's family-owned, everything tastes good, and the price is absolutely right. This restaurant is an example that I wish every other restaurant would follow. |

As our facebook followers know, I got an email from a representative at Chocolate Inspirations, Inc. last week. Chocolate Inspirations, as you can probably guess, is a company that makes gourmet chocolate treats. They are introducing a new vegan line, and they asked me to help them get the word out.
